LIFE @ UC

Transportation

UC-Bearcat shuttles run frequently around campus on weekdays from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM. There are shuttles that run between different campuses and a shuttle service that runs to and from downtown Cincinnati and Newport, KY on weekends from 7:00 PM to 2:20 AM. The only period the shuttle service is disrupted, is during the breaks between semesters and holidays. Check UC DoubleMap for updated routes.

To go to places like Walmart or shopping malls, one can avail the public bus transportation. They might not be the most convenient but are easily accessible around campus and pretty much connect important parts of the city.

Apart from the Bearcat transportation system, UC also provides EZ Ride Metro Card which allows you to go to any place in Cincinnati for just $1. This EZ Metro card is free of charge and is issued every semester upon registration.

Activities

There are a lot of organizations and clubs on campus that promote awareness amongst Indian students. A few of them are:

  • AID, Association for India’s Development is a volunteer movement promoting sustainable, equitable and just development. AID supports grassroots organizations in India and initiates efforts in various interconnected spheres such as agriculture, energy, education, health , livelihoods, natural resources including land and water, women’s empowerment and social justice. Students at UC organize and participate in various fund raising events to serve the purpose.

  • SABHA, The Society for Appreciation of Bharatiya Heritage and Arts, is a very well recognized student organization in UC, started in the year 1992. SABHA aims to foster interest in Indian (Bharatiya) heritage and arts. This is achieved through concerts, lecture demonstrations and workshops of various art forms, with a focus on classical music and dance.  In the past, SABHA has organized concerts by Padma Shri Smt. Sudha Raghunathan, Kalaimamani Shri Unni Krishnan, Kalaimamani Shri. Shashank and Smt. Nithyashree Mahadevan to name a few.

  • UC Cricket Club organizes cricket workshops, cricket tournaments, and also participates in Midwest Cricket leagues. UCCC always emphasizes on high quality in all its endeavours and this can be seen in all of its activities. UCCC has won 9 cricket championships and has a near perfect regular season record in the past 17 years. Memberships are open to all UC students, alumni and other members of the community.

  • The University of Cincinnati Quiz Club’s goal is to provide or serve as a connecting point to every student who is interested in trivia or quizzing. Anything/Everything can be a question. And remember, knowledge is power!

There are many more interesting organizations such as UC BHAKTI YOGA CLUB (UCBYC)University of Cincinnati Mountaineering Club (UCMC) etc which can found at https://campuslink.uc.edu/

Groceries

For your monthly grocery shopping, the most convenient option is Kroger. It is located very close to the campus and is hassle free. For household items, Walmart works out pretty cheap. The closest Walmart by bus, is located on Colerain Avenue.

There is “Jagdeep Indian Grocery” located on Ludlow Avenue, fairly close to the campus and is accessible by the North Route of University shuttle service. The store offers almost every possible Indian grocery item needed to keep your taste buds satisfied. There are other stores like Patel Brothers and Bombay grocers, which are not accessible by public transportation but can be commuted by car.

For dairy products, there is a United Dairy Farmers store located on Clifton Avenue. Kroger, Walmart , CVS and other stores sell dairy items too.

Safety

We suggest that new students look for housing using NAKSHA to find more info on where most Indian students reside. Since it is safer compared to the other areas around campus, most of the Indian students choose to live in these localities.

It is advisable that students walk home or around campus in large groups after 10 PM. The shuttle services are available till 10:00 PM on weekdays during school term.

You can always avail the UC Night Ride facility that picks and drops you anywhere within a mile radius of the campus. They operate from 2000 HRS till midnight (Sunday-Wednesday) and till 0500 HRS (Thursday-Saturday). Please refrain from using the Night Ride for purchases from Kroger or any local shopping.

You may also call UC Nightwalk, a service provided by UC to assist students walking home alone.

Hospitals

University Health Services are located in both east and west campuses and this service is available for students registered with UC insurance or any other UC recognized insurance.

The east campus has an emergency room in the University Hospital and also has a Children’s Hospital. Good Samaritan Hospital and Deaconess Hospital are other hospitals close to campus.
